Local golf program looking for answers after King City Golf Course floods for the fourth time in 13 months

KING CITY, Calif. (KION-TV)- Recent rain has made an impact on a golf course in King City.

In over 13 months, the King City Golf course has flooded at least four times.

When the San Lorenzo Creek flooded, it spilled into the golf course pouring 13 feet of water on the greens and fairways.

“Yesterday it rose quick. It wasn't the amount of water that we saw last January when that gauge right over 20ft. But again, it was a breach," King City Golf Course general manager Jeremy Sarina said.

The cost of the damage is estimated at about $4.2 million. In addition, there's a $600,000 bridge that needs to be replaced, Sarina said.

A local golf non-profit organization, First Tee Monterey County and the city are working together to figure out a plan that would allow water to better flow through the golf course.

“There is a restoration plan that's been worked on as we speak," Sarina said. "And a plan that's going to go out to bid when the rainy season is over, to restore the golf course as part of that plan."

The long-term plan for the golf course is to remove about 200 yards of sediment in the creek and continue looking at placing the greens at an elevation above the 100-year flood stage. 

The city is working with FEMA trying to get funding for the restoration of this project.
