Fire equipment stolen out of Zayante Fire Station

FELTON, Calif. (KION-TV)- The Zayante Fire Protection District are looking for answers after their fire equipment was stolen from Fire Station No. 2 over President's Day weekend.

Firefighters confirmed that multiple fire equipment was stolen including the Jaws of Life, rope rescue equipment, chain saw, forcible entry equipment and compartments of the engine, were ransacked. 

Lompico is a small rural community located in the Santa Cruz Mountains which is four miles north of Felton with a population of 580.

“We personally have had people go over the creek into the edge and how to be pulled out with that equipment the jaw of life," Kim DeWitt who is the owner of Trout Farm Inn said.

The travel time from the main station to station 2 is are 5 minutes away from each other, accessed via Lompico road. 

“We are currently inventorying the losses and trying to develop price points. We believe that the loss is going to be somewhere between $35,000 and $40,000," Zayante Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Maxwell said.

There is little to no connection service as you travel up to the upper Zayante Canyon which is why the station doesn’t have cameras on the building. 

Firefighters are taking a look into the damages at the station and trying to find ways to make it secure and safe.

 “The existing door was a medal plate door and future repairs will include another medal door but with a security door in front to reduce access,” Maxwell said.

The Zayante Fire Protection District is asking people to contact them with any information so that they could serve the community and the residents with the right tools and support.
