SALINAS, Calif. (KION) Police have arrested a suspect in connection to a January shooting on Mae Avenue.

Detectives arrested 20-year-old Jose Perez Tuesday in the Chinatown area of Salinas. He is booked into the Monterey County Jail on attempted murder and gang charges.

The shooting happened in the 600 block of Mae Avenue. Salinas officers responded to 911 calls and a ShotSpotter activation, and within minutes, an 18-year-old victim went to Natividad with a gunshot wound in his back.

The victim, who police say is a known gang member, told them that he had been walking in the area, and the next thing he knew, he was in the hospital.

Police said the victim gave very little information and was uncooperative, but they were able to find evidence and identify Perez as a suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Derek Gibson at 831-758-7442 or dereg@ci.salinas.ca.us.
