Grant Street apartment fire caused by e-bike battery malfunction, fire crews say

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON MAY 1, 2024 AT 12:42 P.M.- Santa Cruz Fire said an e-bike battery malfunction caused an apartment fire on Tuesday.

Firefighters said the fire happened on the 100 block of Grant Street around 3:41 p.m.

Santa Cruz Fire said that the the fire started inside an apartment from a battery that was on an e-bike but quickly spread to the second floor.

Firefighters trapped two people inside and two dogs inside the home.

All occupants were safely evacuated including two dogs rescued from the second floor.

Three fire victims were treated for injuries and transported to local hospitals by ambulance.

Fire officials said the fire caused by a battery malfunction, resulted in extensive damage estimated at $1 million and rendered four units uninhabitable.

Santa Cruz Fire said the American Red Cross is providing temporary housing for seven displaced
people.

The Santa Cruz Police Department are assisting Santa Cruz Fire as crews are responding to a fire at an apartment complex on the 100 block of Grant Street on Tuesday.

Officers say that people who live at the apartment complex and people who live nearby.

Santa Cruz Police confirmed that the fire is out.

Santa Cruz Fire Department Division Chief Ryan Reber told KION that two people suffered injuries. One adult was treated at scene while a minor suffered possible first-degree burns.

Firefighters also rescued two dogs from the second floor. The dogs suffered singed hair and smoke inhalation. Fire officials said flames were seen in the first and second floors.

Reber said that at least seven people were evacuated and displaced. The American Red Cross will be assisting the seven people that were displaced.
