BONNY DOON, Calif. (KION) Cal Fire said it has scheduled a 22 acre prescribed burn on the San Vicente Redwoods property in the upper Bonny Doon area of Santa Cruz County Thursday.

The burn will happen between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., but Cal Fire said smoke may be visible in the area for one or two days after the burn.

The burn is part of Cal Fire's Vegetation Management Program, which is intended to reduce fuel accumulations and help with nutrient cycling and fire-dependent plant species. The project will also be done in accordance with a Smoke Management Permit to minimize smoke impacts.

Cal Fire is working with the Peninsula Open Space Trust, the Sempervirens Fund and the Save the Redwoods League to conduct the burn. The area is part of ongoing research, and POST, the Sempervirens Fund and the Save the Redwoods league are funding research by the Amah Mutsun Land Trust to see how prescribed burns can be a tool for vegetation management, resource enhancement and fire safety.
