Santa Cruz residents protest loud jet noises on National No Fly Day

Santa Cruz residents, angry about loud noises from jets flying over their homes took their frustrations to SFO Saturday.

This is part of National No Fly Day, led by Save Our Skies Santa Cruz, pushing for change in flight patterns.

“The nextgen program is a program that needs to be seriously looked at before it is enacted in any other community,” said Save Our Skies co-chair Patrick Meyer.

They’ve met with the FAA to discuss ways to decrease what they call noise pollution over Santa Cruz due to the new flight path to SFO.

“It’s very important that our elected officials pressure the FAA to change these flight patterns,” said Meyer.

“I’m dissatisfied that they chose to reroute without asking the population that would be impacted by it,” Soquel resident John Stroud.

Some residents of the Soquel neighborhood of Santa Cruzsay jet noise is ruining their peace and quiet.

“It seems like it’s becoming even more intense,” said Soquel resident Mike Wilson.

“Every 15 minutes it’s like vrooom your house is being invaded,” saidRon Scadina. “So now our sanctuary has been invaded by corporate America which is like hello!”

While noise is a big problem, safety is also a big concern.

“The commercial jets as they come out of into their landing they step outside of a restricted area that is safe for them and into an area where small engine airplanes fly and could easily create a catastrophe.”

Whether something will be done is up in the air for now residents say they will just have to live with it.

“What’s fair is what other patterns are available, what other patterns were they using prior,” said Scadina. “How can we share that noise with the entire community whether it being focused on one area.”
