Monterey man arrested on arson charges, police say

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV)- On Thursday afternoon, Monterey Police announced they arrested a 64-year-old man after he allegedly set a trash can on fire on Saturday.

Officers said they were called out to the Compact Disco on 420 Tyler Street for reports of a trash can fire in the restroom.

Police said that the fire completely melted the trash can but it was put out by store employees.

Investigators said that 64-year-old John Sovereign started the fire.

Monterey Police said that Sovereign was arrested around 8 p.m. on Sunday night. Sovereign was booked into the Monterey County Jail on arson charges.

Sovereign was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail and his bail was set at $15,000.
