MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV)- The County of Monterey Public Works, Facilities and Park Department will be having a grand opening on Thursday afternoon for the first dog park at Toro Park.

County officials said the dog park will be named Quail Meadows Dog Park. The park was designed and built by one of the scouts from the Boy Scouts of America Troop 60 Spreckels.

Nathan Poggemeyer who is a Boy Scout contacted the Parks Division and told them that there was a lack of leash-free dog parks in the area.

Poggemyer was able to raise funds for the dog park and gathered materials with his troop and volunteers to build the dog park over the past couple of weeks.

"County of Monterey Parks has a long history of partnering with Eagle Scouts to provide park projects and we look forward to many more years of working together to improve our wonderful recreation areas," Chief of Parks Bryan Flores said. "Many thanks to Nathan and is fellow Scouts for this wonderful addition to Toro Park.”

County officials said Poggemeyer and his fellow Boy Scouts are currently working on a project to build a playground for dogs at the new park.

The event will start at noon.
