55-year-old man arrested after allegedly stabbing a man with a broken broom handle, police say

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV)- Salinas Police have arrested a 55-year-old man who allegedly stabbed a man with a broken broom handle on Monday night.

Police said the incident took place around 5 p.m. on the 300 block of Williams Road for a report of two men fighting. When police got to the scene they located a man outside of a laundromat who was bleeding heavily from his abdomen.

The man was unable to provide a witness statement since he was transported to a local hospital. Investigators were able to locate a knife and backpack next to him.

Officers said that the suspect who is identified as 55-year-old Pedro Lopez was still in the laundromat. Witnesses told officers that Lopez beat the the man outside of the laundromat with a metal broom handle.

Police said the broom handle broke into two pieces and Lopez used one piece of the broom handle to stab the the man as they continued to fight.

Investigators said the bloody broken broom handle was discarded in a trash can inside the laundromat.

Lopez was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail on multiple charges including attempted murder charges, violation of probation and driving with a suspended license.

Police said the victim is currently in stable condition at this hour.
