One person dead in solo car collision

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. (KION-TV)- UPDATE AUGST 21, 2023 9:49 A.M.: More information on the fatal crash has been released by Santa Cruz CHP.

According to reports, a 77 year old Monterey man was driving a silver 2004 Ford Crown Victoria on Highway 1 towards Highway 17 at an unknown speed.

For an unknown reason, the man veered off the road and crashed into a tree. The result of the crash left the man with major injuries. Despite life saving efforts, the man died at the scene according to medical personnel.

The cause of death is still under investigation. It isn't known at this time if drugs and/or alcohol were involved.

CHP says the accident took place on Highway 1 just before Highway 17 at around 4:30 am when a vehicle struck a tree.

Drivers in the area should expect delays and try to avoid the area if possible.
