Inmate who walked away from Salinas Valley State Prison captured in Nipomo

SOLEDAD, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 6/26/2020 3:40 p.m. An inmate who escaped from Salinas Valley State Prison Tuesday night has been caught, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitaition.

The inmate, identified as Edgar C. Delgado, reportedly walked away from the prison's Minimum Support Facility, which was confirmed during an emergency count at around 8:20 p.m.

The CDCR said Delgado was found in Nipomo Friday afternoon. Shortly before 2 p.m., agents from Fresno and the Bay Area along with members of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Gang Task Force acted on information they got during the investigation and found Delgado at a fast food restaurant.

He was arrested and returned to Salinas Valley State Prison. His case will be referred to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office to consider escape charges.

Delgado was admitted from Santa Barbara in 2019. He was set to serve a four-year-sentence for gun and drug sales charges. He was set to be released in June 2021.

UPDATE 6/24/20 12:02 a.m. - An inmate, identified as Edgar C. Delgado, escaped from Salinas Valley State Prison Tuesday night, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The CDCR says Delgado, 37, walked away from the Soledad prison's Minimum Support Facility, which was confirmed during an emergency count at around 8:20 p.m.

CDCR's Office of Correctional Safety was sent out to search the area and is being assisted by local law enforcement including California Highway Patrol.

Delgado is described as:

  • Hispanic
  • Has black hair
  • Has brown eyes
  • Has a goatee
  • Five feet, seven inches tall
  • Wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray sweatpants

On Tuesday night an inmate managed to escape the Salinas Valley State Prison, according to a public information officer.

At the moment no further details are being released other than confirmation of the inmate's escape.
