Monterey County Sheriff’s Office shows time-lapse video of busy traffic during the holidays in Big Sur

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol are reminding local residents and tourist to be mindful heading towards Big Sur.
On Thursday the sheriff’s office shared on their Facebook, a time-lapse video to get a message across about being courteous and orderly while driving on Highway 1 near Bixby Bridge. The post also reminded drivers to be cautious and mindful while stopping to get photographs at popular sites.
“Biggest thing to say is that if there’s not a parking spot readily available that will take your car all the way off the roadway you got to keep moving,” said Sgt. Robert Lehman with CHP.
The video showed heavy traffic and that a person was cited with an infraction for standing out through a sun roofer.
“What it comes down to is the matter of education, “Lehman said. “People realizing you can’t stop on the road, you can’t stand up outside your vehicle while driving by. That’s just dangerous and someone is going to get hurt doing that.”
Lehman said social media has been one of the factors that has people flocking into Big Sur for the holidays. But it is also how they’re hoping to get their message out as well.
“I encourage everyone to be patient. Whether you’re a tourist or a local resident. Especially on the weekends, the holidays, and especially when the when the weather is good. There’s going to be some extensive delays getting in and out of Big Sur.”
