PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) - Following a surge in COVID-19 cases in Monterey County, the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History has been forced to close again. However, through it's digital programming initiative, learning will continue this weekend with a virtual mushroom walk.

The downtown Pacific Grove museum launched its digital programming initiative - Museum to You - back in March. The museum says it has proved to be a resourceful solution to help entertain the community - digitally - as we deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. The initiative has also incorporated a number of virtual programs to keep it's momentum going including: “Bug Out With Bree!” “Create With Us,” and “Exploring the Coast With Hannah." Other interactive programs are hosted by museum educators and staff.

If you would like to participate, program links are available here.

The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History has a number of events in the works. Here's a list of what's planned in the coming days and weeks:

Thursday, Dec. 10

  • Create with Us: Upcycled Holidays, 11 a.m. — Everyday should be Earth Day and the holidays should be no exception. Tune in on YouTube to make eco-friendly gifts and wrapping.

Saturday, Dec. 12

  • Junior Naturalist Mushroom Walk, 10 a.m.-noon — Join us as Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks District representative Joseph Narvaez guides Junior Naturalist members on a mushroom walk and reveals the hidden world of local fungi. Come learn about the important role these organisms play in our local ecosystems and where to find them. To RSVP and receive details, please contact the Museum's Community Science and Outreach Coordinator Jaclyn Schneider at schneider@pgmuseum.org or join the club.

Thursday, Dec. 17

  • Exploring the Coast with Hannah, 11 a.m. — Join Hannah on YouTube as she takes a look back at all the amazing things we explored here on the coast this year!

Saturday, Jan. 30

  • Science Saturday: Amazing Migrations — Join us as we investigate the world of long-distance animal travels. Whales, birds, insects, and more will be the focus of our deeper look at these natural phenomena. Learn about the many amazing migratory birds that visit Monterey County every year, and celebrate another birthday (No. 38) for Sandy the Whale, the amazing 40-foot sculpture outside the museum!
