Shuman Hearthouse unveils heart-shaped artwork

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV)- A Monterey artist has donated  eight large artworks featuring creative images of hearts to Shuman Hearthouse just in time for Valentine's Day.

Peter Hiller donated his art to the shelter. He is a local retired arts educator, visual artist and the author of an award-winning book. He has lived on the Monterey Peninsula for over forty years.

Homelessness is an ongoing issue and Hearthouse is trying to help out.

Shuman Hearthouse is a first-of-its-kind shelter for the city of Monterey. It opened up in early November of last year.

Shuman Hearthouse is located at 600 E. Franklin Street and provides shelter for up to 35 women and families with children. This shelter offers 3-6 month stays and support including meals, counseling, and resources to help guests transition to stable housing in order to rebuild their lives.

The organization noticed that the rooms in the shelter needed a little bit more color into the rooms and when they heard about the Hiller donation they thought the artwork would look great inside the family rooms and the breakout rooms.

“It shows a warm living space. You don't want to go into a shelter where you know you've it's just cold and there's no there's no life to it, said Shuman Hearthouse Senior Program Officer, Evangeline Ochoa. "So this actually brings that out of the, you know, into the shelter brings out the life of the beauty of art.”

In each of the rooms the program officer put baskets of toiletries on the beds for the families and women.

The artwork that was just recently added showcases hearts in different lights which Ochoa told us that it goes perfectly with the name of the organization.
