Union eliminated from U.S. Open Cup in extra time clash with LAFC

SEASIDE, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A sold out Cardinale Stadium was no match for the determination of LAFC as they came away with a victory over the Crisp and Kelp in extra time. Monterey Bay F.C. can now shift its focus to the USL Championship after being eliminated from U.S. Open Cup competition.

Final score 2-2 with the LAFC finishing off the win in penalty kicks.

It wasn't without a fight from the Union, however. LAFC scored in the 25th minute thanks to a goal by Christian Torres.

From there it was a series of close chances and big saves from goalkeeper Antony Siaha that kept the Union in the game.

Then came the late heroics from Simon Dawkins in the 89th minute. A scramble in front of the net led to a Dawkins strike right out of the reach of LAFC's goalkeeper to tie the game.

Regulation time would end, but the game would not as both teams saw the game go to extra time.

The first frame started well with Jesse Maldonado, another sub in the game alongside Dawkins, scoring a goal in the 95th minute.

Ten minutes later, however, Matheus Maia of LAFC found some open space to score the tying goal.

It all came down to penalties where Siaha was outdueled by LAFC goalkeeper, Eldin Jakupovic who made one final save to clinch the Round of 16 berth for LAFC.

Monterey Bay F.C.'s next game is in USL play against New Mexico United on the road on May 13 at 6 p.m.
