Ramsey Park Pumptrack hosting all-girls pump track event
WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION) The City of Watsonville and Bike Santa Cruz County will be hosting an all-girls event on Sunday to teach girls how to use the pump track.
Drew Rogers, a community activist, says he thought of the idea thinking about his childhood and how his sisters didn't grow up with the same opportunities as he did. He wanted to give young girls that chance that his sisters never had.
"I really wanted girls like my sisters to be able to not just get on it but to learn how to do it well and to get them, activate them so that maybe they'll want to become mountain bikers or ride their bikes more, get them outside, and empower themselves and each other," says Rogers.
The Executive Director of Bike Santa Cruz County, Gina Cole, says classes like this provide a foundation for girls and hopefully inspire them to continue sports.
"A sport like this can be very intimidating. This is a great start for girls to get that confidence in a small group with a coach so that they can experience that excitement and that exhilaration of being on a track like this," says Cole.
Susana Tostado says she's always enjoyed riding her bike with her family and jumped at the opportunity to attend an event like this.
"Once I heard about this I started getting really excited. The first time I was here, my sister was like jump, jump, and I don't know how to jump so I really want to know how to," says Tostado.
The class size was limited due to COVID but Rogers hopes that they'll be bigger classes in the future and more events.
