Watch: Lost man attempting to return to home in Santa Cruz Mountains rescued

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION) The California Highway Patrol shared video showing the rescue of a man who attempted to return to his home in the Santa Cruz Mountains and got lost.

The 73-year-old was reported missing and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office eventually got a call from him saying he was lost somewhere between Highway 17 and Highway 9, which is in an area under evacuation orders due to the CZU August Lightning Complex Fires. The CHP said he had been lost for two days.

The Sheriff's Office launched a search and rescue operation and used a GPS location to find him. He was injured and unable to walk to the nearest trail, so a CHP helicopter hoisted him out. He was taken to a landing zone and transferred to an ambulance for medical assessment.

The Sheriff's Office is continuing to urge people to stay away from areas under evacuation orders.
