State Parks: Big Basin “extensively damaged” in CZU August Lightning Complex Fires

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION) State Parks said Big Basin Redwoods State Parks has suffered extensive damage as a result of the CZU August Lightning Complex Fires burning in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties.

The agency said the park's headquarters, historic core and campgrounds were damaged, and the park is closed until further notice. Campers, visitors and staff were evacuated.

According to the Sempervirens Fund, tributes in dedicated trees or groves have likely been impacted the fires, but they do not know the extent of the damage yet.

Other parks closed due to wildfires include:

  • Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park
  • Año Nuevo State Park
  • Andrew Molera State Park
  • Garrapata State Park
  • Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
  • John Little State Natural Reserve
  • Limekiln State Park
  • Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
  • Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
  • Point Sur State Historic Park

Before visiting a park, the agencies checking ahead because conditions are changing quickly.
