SALINAS, Calif. (KION) K-9 Oakley with the Salinas Police Department recently graduated from firearm detection school, and he helped police find unregistered guns Tuesday.

Police said officers with the Violence Suppression Task Force contacted people in two vehicles near Tatums Garden Park. Officers said they were blocking the road for people to feed their horses at the Rodeo grounds.

Officers spoke to four men, who they said seemed nervous and gave stories about what they were doing in the area that did not make sense.

K-9 Oakley sniffed around the outside of the vehicles and let officers know that there were guns in both. Officers said they found an unregistered gun in each vehicle during a search.

Police arrested 21-year-old Manuel Maya and 21-year-old Chris Narez on charges that include being a felon in possession of a gun and being a gang member with a loaded gun in public and booked into the Monterey County Jail.
