SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- UC Santa Cruz Police are investigating the appearance of a rope hanging on a street sign along campus.

Police believe there may be some bias related to the incident, which is why they're stepping in.

Community members expressed concerns over social media that the rope was tied in a "noose-like" fashion.

Video released by UC Santa Cruz Police shows four people of interest were caught on camera hanging the rope up onto a street sign at High Street and Coolidge.

"We're concerned that someone would place the rope on a street sign like this in a public view," says UCSC Police Chief, Nader Oweis. "We want to understand their motivations around it"

Police are currently looking for these individuals and have yet to have anyone step forward to identify them.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call  the UC Santa Cruz Police Department at 831.459.2231 ext. 1 to speak with an officer.
