Crews contain vegetation fire near Highway 101 and Airport Blvd

SALINAS, Calif. (KION) Crews have contained a vegetation fire that burned near Highway 101 and Airport Boulevard.

The Salinas Fire Department said it battled two fires relatively close to each other Thursday.

There were some structures nearby, but they were not affected.

A witness told KION that he thought he heard a loud pop, but the cause of the fire has not been confirmed. Chief Barreto said it is possible the fire may have started from Mylar balloons hitting power lines.

Southbound Highway 1010 is currently slowed to one lane, but both fires are contained.
