APTOS, Calif. (KION) The pier at Seacliff State Beach in Aptos will be closed for an extended period of time as a result of damage caused by surf.

State parks crews tell KION that one of the pilings of the pier is badly damaged.

It was originally closed temporarily for safety reasons, but not it is staying closed until an engineer can assess the damage.

Some Santa Cruz County residents are upset that it is closed, and based on what they see, they cannot understand why it has been closed.

"It's been kind of sad," said Watsonville resident Tony Alvarez. "You can't walk over there anymore, and you don't see all the people fishing... It doesn't look all that bad. I don't think 10 to 15 people would smash it down and make it fall, so I think they should open it back up."

State Parks does not know when the pier will reopen to the public yet or the cost of repairs.
