Lovers Point Pier temporarily closed for repairs
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) The Lovers Point Pier is temporarily closed for a minor repair, according to Pacific Grove police.
Public Works said it will repair the stairs leading down to the pier. "The step is not conforming to a normal step. Anybody that would want to walk on it could possibly slip and fall," said Pacific Grove Public Works Director, Daniel Gho.
The pier's damage is something the city said they view as a minor fix, after decades of withstanding strong waves and storms. "It's all succumb to the weather and the elements over the years. It could have something to do with the waves in the past," said Gho.
This comes as King Tides are expected to roll through the area this week. The annual occurrence takes place when the gravitational pull of the sun and moon align, creating the highest tide of the year.
Police said the high waves can be a safety hazard. In the past, the waves have been high enough to go over the sea wall.
Police suggest keeping a safe distance from the waves and avoiding the ocean front turn-outs if they are closed.
"I would never turn my back on the ocean. Just follow the rules. Be safe. Don't do it," said Pacific Grove resident, June Stein.
