(KION) Former NBA commissioner David Stern died Wednesday at the age of 77, according to the league.

Stern presided over the league for three decades. The NBA said in a statement that Stern "passed away this afternoon as a result of the brain hemorrhage he suffered approximately three weeks ago. His wife, Dianne, and their family were with him at his bedside."

The NBA said on Dec. 12 that Stern suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage that required emergency surgery. Stern's son told CNN a few days later that his father had not been conscious since the hemorrhage and was on a breathing tube.
