GILROY, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 12/12/2019 2:45 p.m. Gilroy police tell KION that they believe an incident in which a hotel guest was nearly hit by a crossbow bolt was isolated.

Police also said they do not believe it is related to the projectile attacks that have happened along Highways 101 and 156. The victim does not think they were targeted, but the bolt came within 18 inches of them.

PREVIOUS STORY: In what was certainly a frightening moment for a hotel guest, Gilroy Police say an out-of-town visitor was nearly struck by a crossbow bolt Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the person was staying at the Best Western Inn on Leavesley Road, when at around 1:15 p.m., the 6 1/2'' bolt narrowly missed their head while standing on their 2nd floor balcony. The bolt hit the wall next to them.

Police are searching for information about anyone with a handheld crossbow similar to the image seen in the below stock photo

GPD says people can contact them anonymously.

"This weapon is definitely not a toy and it appears it should not be in the possession of this person. Any help you can provide would be useful," Gilroy Police wrote on their Facebook page.
