The City of Santa Cruz now officially has a new Mayor.

Justin Cummings was sworn in at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

In a 7-0 vote last month, the council voted to make Cummings the Mayor, following some time as Vice Mayor.

According to the city, Cummings is an educator and environmentalist who moved to Santa Cruz to pursue an education in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCSC, and earned his Ph.D. in 2013.

In a previous Facebook post, Cummings says, " While being on the City Council comes with its challenges, it is still an honor to be able to serve my community in a leadership capacity. I am looking forward to 2020 and all the things we can to together as a community. "
