One dead after train collides with truck south of Castroville
UPDATE 11/14/2019 3:00 P.M. The Amtrak train involved in the accident is the "Coast Starlight," which was traveling North on a route that goes from Los Angeles to Seattle. The route has several stops, including Paso Robles, Salinas and San Jose. The crash happened after the scheduled 6:26 p.m. Salinas stop.
Amtrak tells KION there were 167 passengers on the train along with 16 crew members.
UPDATE 3:04 A.M.: The engine in the locomotive is broken, as passengers remain inside.
Officials say the train will be returning to the Salinas station, then to Oakland once issues are fixed.
One person was killed after a train collided with a truck south of Castroville, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
The accident happened at around 6:50 p.m. near Rodgers Road and Highway 183. The Amtrak train hit the truck. The driver of the truck died of his injures at the scene. One person with minor injuries was reported on the train. Approximately 169 passengers were onboard the train.
The truck was a portable toilet maintenance truck and spilled 750 gallons of sewage in the area.
While the scene is still active, the only road closure is at the location of the train tracks.
This is being considered a "medium-sized" HAZMAT situation.
Union Pacific is handling the clean-up and CHP is investigating the crash.
