Monterey doctor on probation for prescribing without proper exam, according to medical board

The Medical Board of California said it placed a Monterey doctor on probation for prescribing medication without a proper exam.

It charged Dr. Richard Gilliam with failing to maintain patient records and prescribing powerful medication to multiple patients without an exam.

Gilliam has not admitted to the charges and will not lose his medical license, but he will not be able to prescribe, dispense, administer or have certain controlled substances. He will also have to take several courses that include prescribing practices, medical record keeping and ethics among other requirements.

Gilliam will be on probation until Oct. 25, 2024.
