Santa Cruz agencies to hold emergency preparation event ahead of Loma Prieta anniversary

Several public safety agencies in Santa Cruz are coming together to hold an emergency preparation event ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake.

On Oct. 13, the agencies will provide safety information and give presentations from noon to 4 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.

Some of the agencies participating include Santa Cruz Fire, Santa Cruz Police, the American Red Cross, CERT, PG&E, Netcom county dispatchers, Firewise, Firesafe, California OES and others.

Santa Cruz Fire said the purpose of the event is to use the lessons learned from past events to stay safe in the future.

According to the USGS, the Loma Prieta earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9, and it happened on Oct. 17, 1989 near the Loma Prieta peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
