Firefighters injured while battling Greenfield brush fire

UPDATE: CalFire reports that three injured firefighters have been treated and released from hospitals.

ORIGIAL STORY: Three firefighters were taken to out-of-area burn centers for injuries suffered while fighting a vegetation fire near Greenfield Sunday afternoon.

A CalFire spokesperson tells KION that the firefighters are OK. One of them was released from the hospital Sunday evening and the other two are expected to be released soon as well.

The injured firefighters were flown out by helicopter to Fresno and Santa Clara burn centers. CalFire does not yet have details about how the firefighters got burned or the extent of the burns on the body.

“As soon as we find out some more information and particulars, we will be releasing those,” said Jonathan Pangburn, a CalFire spokesperson. “So I hope you just bear with me as some of that information is unknown to me at this time.”

Firefighters received a 911 call at around 2 p.m. Sunday about the vegetation fire close to Greenfield off of Thorne Road. The fire has already been 100 percent contained at 37 acres.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said evacuations were being conducted on Cedar Avenue. Greenfield firefighters and the Monterey County Regional Fire District also helped battle the flames.

CalFire says they have had a rather slow start to the peak fire season in our area and the rest of the state, but fires like these are reminders that fire is a year-round danger in California.

CalFire says the cause of the vegetation fire near Greenfield is still under investigation.

UPDATED 9/1/19 7:33 p.m.
