New wine labeling law could boost tourism in Monterey

Starting January 1 all wines labeled with an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located entirely within Monterey County, must also include the term “Monterey County” on the label.

“Bottles throughout the world will now have “Monterey County” on the label, bringing value not only to the local wine industry, but also extra value to tourism, agriculture, and other industries aligned with brand Monterey,” Executive Director of Monterey County Vinters and Growers Association Kim Stemler said.

The original bill was authored by Assembly member Mark Stone (D-Monterey Bay). It will require Monterey County wines be labeled to identify the region where the grapes were grown.

Tonight at 5 and 6 p.m. on KION News Channel 5/46 find out how this new labeling will work and how it could bring more tourism and name recognition to the area.
