Promising snowpack report! But end to drought… still not here
The latest snowpack report is out, and there is some good news.
State water officials say the Sierra Nevada snowpack is at 95 percent of the average during non-drought years. That’s an increase from the snowpack survey taken on March 1. (And FYI, California gets about 1/3 of its water supply from the Sierra Nevada snowpack as it melts.)
According to PG&E, a healthy snowpack has widespread impacts.
“This snow will melt, go into our reservoirs and then be able to provide not only clean hyrdro-electric power to our customers, but a good flow for downstream users as well,” PG&E Spokesperson Brandi Merlo said.
Experts say despite that, the drought is still not over. Northern California did have a rainy winter, but local climate experts are predicting another dry summer.
