Man sentenced to 27 years for crime spree at Salinas apartment

19 year old, Alexander Julian Chavero of Salinas was sentenced to 27 years in prison for repeatedly preying on residents of a south Salinas apartment complex. According to Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo, Chavero’s crime spree started on August 8, 2014. Chavero held his first victim up at gunpoint demanded car keys, and made the victim take him to his apartment to get money. Upon entering the apartment, the victim’s wife gave Chavero $40. Chavero then hit the victim in the head with the butt of the gun, threatened to kill the victim and his family if they called police, and then stole the victim’s car.

A week later, Chavero found his second victim at the same apartment complex. The victim was standing outside his car when Chavero approached him and placed a gun to the victim’s chest demanding the keys to the car. The victim handed the keys over and watched as Chavero drove away in his car.

September 24, 2014, Chavero again returned to the apartment complex and approached his third victim. The victim was putting his daughter into his car as Chavero told him to give the keys or he would be shot. A vigilant neighbor saw the attempted carjacking and Salinas Police officers quickly responded to the scene. Chavero was taken into custody and the firearm found in his possession was confiscated. On August 26, 2015, Chavero pled guilty to charges of carjacking, robbery, kidnapping, and threatening witnesses in an attempt to dissuade them from reporting a crime. Chavero also admitted to sentencing enhancements for his use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

This case was investigated by the Salinas Police Department and investigators of the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
