Water conservation enforced in Hollister

Residents in Hollister may now see code enforcement officers patrolling the city. In April, the City Council voted to make water conservation part of the code enforcement duties.

Officers spend about four hours a day, three days a week checking for water run off and whether homeowners are watering on the correct days.

NewsChannel 5 asked an officer we rode along with how many people she catches each day, not following the rules.

“Typically in a particular neighborhood you can get anywhere between twenty and forty, um, the most I have gotten in a day was 62,” code enforcement officer Desiree Martinez said.

If residents are not compliant they get a warning first, then a follow up letter, and finally a $100 fine and the fines increase with additional offenses.
