UPDATE: Greenfield homicide victim in Tuesday’s shooting identified

UPDATE 5/8/2015: Greenfield police said the victim in Tuesday night’s, Joseph Anthony Aguilera, 21, shooting has died.

UPDATE 5/6/2015 5:02 p.m.: South Monterey County has been hit with four separate shootings in four days and police said they may be connected. Overall, there have been three homicides, two in King City and one in Greenfield. Police said the victim of Tuesday’s shooting in Greenfield is in serious condition.

Despite being startled after a car crashed into his Greenfield house, Leland McFarland knew he needed to be there for his wife.

“I had to hold her for probably 10 minutes,” McFarland said. “She didn’t want me to go outside but I had to see what happened.”

For Mike Urquides, it started off as a normal evening.

“I was laying down, watching KION News at Five,” Urquides said. “I told my daughter and granddaughter to get down. Somebody is shooting.”

Greenfield police said on Deleon Drive, a man was shot, he lost control of his car, and according to the owner, hit all five of her cars then hit McFarland’s house.

Whether it’s this shattered glass on the ground or busted cars, police said it’s all evidence that can help them.

“We’ve developed some leads, and I believe this is highly solvable,” Greenfield Police Chief Adele Frese said.

Frese said officers believe all of the recent south county shootings are connected because they have similar methods of operation.

“These aren’t shootings that are happening from across the street or from, you know, hundreds of feet away. They are happening up close and personal,” Frese said.

Now McFarland has to deal with putting his house back in order. He has his work cut out for him with all of the damage from the crash. He hopes law enforcement follows through on their end.

“I’d like to see justice done,” McFarland said.

Frese said she’s not ready to declare all of the recent shootings as gang-related just yet. She said it’s too early to make that call.

UPDATE 5/6/2015 3:14 p.m.: The victim in Tuesday night’s attempted homicide, near Deleon Drive and Dart Way, is in critical condition, according to Greenfield police.

Officers said the man was shot several times and he was taken to the hospital.

Greenfield police said officers received help from multiple agencies including Soledad police, King City police, CalFire, Greenfield Fire, California Highway Patrol, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers said suspects, in a dark colored Honda with tinted windows, approached the victim’s car at a stop sign at 500 Deleon Drive and fired a gun near the intersection of Reed Way and Deleon Drive.

Officers said the victim lost control of his car and crashed into four parked cars and a house.

Police said the suspect car was seen driving out of the neighborhood and headed toward Highway 101.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

Police chiefs from all four south Monterey County cities plan to have more information on the recent spike in gang violence Wednesday evening.

UPDATE 5/06/15 12:28p.m.: Greenfield police say officers plan to meet with several law enforcement agencies Wednesday afternoon to discuss the recent increase in gang violence in south Monterey County.

PREVIOUS STORY: Greenfield police confirm one person has been shot and taken to a hospital.

Police said everything may have started as a car chase between the victim’s car and the suspects. One of those cars crashed into the front yard of a house near Dart Way and Deleon Drive. There was minimal damage to the home.

Monterey County Sheriff deputies, CHP and Soledad Police are all on scene with Greenfield officers, investigating.

No word on the victim’s condition or if there are any leads on a suspect.
