Monterey hospice burglarized, donors warned

The Hospice Foundation at 80 Garden Court was burglarized Monday evening, according to the Foundation.

“It was a pretty disruptive scene,” said Siobhan Greene, foundation CEO. “The office was pretty much ransacked, emptied out cabinet, pulled through drawers broken locks on drawers.”

Whoever broke into their office stole laptops, projectors and office supplies — up to $7,000 worth of property.

“It’s clich but it is a feeling of being violated, it’s a feeling of being disruptive and being disrespected,” said Greene.

Greene said suspects went through anything that looked financial. She said almost every donation that was sent in the past couple of weeks has been accounted for but is asking anyone who donated by check or credit card between May 19 and 23 to monitor their bank account for fraudulent activity.

“We are making an effort to call all of our donors,” said Greene.

Now Greene is installing an alarm system; she never imagined this type of crime to occur at a facility that works hard to help others at the most dire time.

“Our work is so much about respecting peoples lives and granting towards organizations that do amazing work with people at the end of their lives, it just felt so incongruent to have somebody come into our space and do so much damage,” said Greene.

Police are following leads and said there were other break-ins nearby. The Foundation picking up and moving on.

“Disappointed and upset yes – deterred from our mission, not at all,” said Greene.

The Foundation is now contacting donors who might have made contributions during that time, but if you haven’t been contacted you are advised to the Foundation office at 831-333-9023 as soon as possible.

A police investigation is underway.
