7 local schools honored as “California Distinguished Schools”

Seven local schools have been named to the state’s list of distinguished elementary schools, state officials said Wednesday.

They’re among 424 public elementary schools in the state to be named California Distinguished Schools. The schools are being recognized for their strong commitment and innovative approaches to improving student academic achievement.

Monterey County schools honored:

Carmel River Elementary, Carmel Unified School District

Robert Down Elementary, Monterey Pacific Grove Unified SD

Frank Ledesma Elementary, Monterey Soledad Unified SD

Santa Cruz County schools honored:

Happy Valley Elementary

Mountain Elementary Mountain Elementary

Valencia Elementary, Pajaro Valley Unified School District

Brook Knoll Elementary, Scotts Valley Unified School District

“I applaud these strong, thriving schools that are making such impressive strides in preparing their students for continued success,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. “This award is well-deserved by these school communities for their enduring dedication to high standards, hard work, and unwavering support.”

To apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria, including accountability measures.
