UPDATE 3:45 p.m. As Shelter in Place orders begin in Central Coast counties, some stores are offering a chance for seniors to shop for necessities locally and state-wide.

Two chain stores offering senior hours are Safeway and Whole Foods. Safeway will be hosting senior hours from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, but other at-risk groups, such as pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems, are also encouraged to shop at that time.

Whole Foods is allowing people aged 60 and over to shop one hour before the store regularly opens. For example, the location at the Del Monte Shopping Center opens at 9 a.m., so its senior hour begins at 8 a.m.

In Greenfield, Rancho San Miguel will be hosting a time for seniors to shop from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Customers are asked to use the doors closest to Highway 101.

PREVIOUS STORY: Rancho San Miguel Market in Greenfield will be hosting a senior shopping hour during Monterey County's Shelter in Place, according to Mayor Walker.

The market will be open from 7 to 8 a.m. starting tomorrow and until further notice for seniors only. The store asks that customers use the doors closest to Highway 101.

Rite Aid, however, will no longer be able to open from 6 to 7 a.m. for a senior shopping hour due to corporate instructions. The manager told Walker that if it opens, they will keep residents informed.
