AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am affected by storm

The past weekend’s storm brought disaster and destruction to the grounds of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. Strong winds and rain tore apart seating, decor, and fan venues.

“The wind really did the most damage, as well all know. Saturday morning, it came through with hurricane-type winds and really destroyed one of our hospitality venues,” said Steve John, CEO of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.

The golf course was closed to spectators, Monday. John said safety was at top of mind when making the decision. “That’s why the golf courses were closed to spectators, today . There’s some cleanup required. Small tents need to be replaced. Everything we’re doing, today, i s to prepare for Thursday,” said John.

Employees have been working around the clock to get everything back in “tip-top” shape. The Grey Goose-sponsored venue, The View, is being rebuilt after taking a massive hit from the storm. The damage forced crews to start from scratch.

“We basically scrapped the deck of the tent that was destroyed. They’re building a new tent right now. The Grey Goose lounge will be built, up and ready to go, tomorrow night . Probably Wednesday, at the latest,” said John.

Infrastructure wasn’t the only aspect affected by the, less than favorable, weather conditions. Players are also bracing for what is to come. “Just gotta wear a few more layers than normal. A couple gloves, and a beanie, and keep a lot of stuff in your bag. Maybe an extra towel, or two, to keep dry. It’s all part of it, so it’ll be fun,” said golfer Anders Albertson, who will compete on Thursday.

Albertson said playing in the rain is a challenge, but one he is ready to take on. “Hopefully, I’ll hit straight and I’m able to take one more club into the greens, and I’m able to get it there,” said Albertson.

Events are expected to pick back up tomorrow for the “Chevron Shoot-out.”
