Police: Suspect seen threatening people with machete in custody after standoff

SALINAS, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 5:45 p.m. A suspect is in custody after a five hour standoff with Salinas police.

Police tell KION that this is their second time responding to the 200 block of Pajaro Street.

The suspect, 23-year-old Fernando Becerra, is described as having mental health issues, and police said he was seen threatening people with a machete.

When police got there, they said he threatened an officer and barricaded himself in an electrical room in a parking garage.

Police and SWAT used teargas to get him out.

PREVIOUS STORY: Salinas police are asking people to avoid the area around the 200 block of Pajaro Street until further notice.

Police said a person is barricaded and armed with a machete.

The SWAT team is at the scene. Police tell us there are currently no reported injuries.
