SOLEDAD, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Monterey County DA's office announced Friday that one man is recovering in the hospital after reports of a shooting late Thursday night near the 1700 block of Vosti Avenue in Soledad.

Deputies say that around 11:38 p.m., Soledad Police Dispatch got a call that a man was hiding from police and that police were allegedly shooting at him.

Police arrived on scene and learned that the shooting was unfounded. The DA also said that officers found the subject at the 1700 block of Vosti Avenue and requested that he speak with them.

The person then approached the officers "rapidly" while holding what they call a "long metal machinist file approximately 8” long," which the police mistook for a knife, according to the DA's office.

More shots were reported to Soledad Police Dispatch, and then the male subject was taken to a local hospital where is is being treated for unspecified injuries and is in stable condition.

The DA's office did not say if anyone was physically shot during the altercation.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
