Family safe after morning fire in Hollister

HOLLISTER, Calif. (KION) - A house fire in Hollister left a family without a home, and grieving the loss of their pets.

According to Hollister Fire, the call for the fire at the 600 block of B Street came in around 9 a.m., with Hollister Fire containing the fire in 25 minutes.

While both Shyliene and Allan Days were at work, they received a call no homeowner wants to get, their home, up in flames.

"We can't wrap my head around how much this is gonna cost, just in general, just as a whole," said Days.

The couple, trying to come to terms with the damage to their very first home.

"But it's still gonna be a lot of work to put it back together. And it's gonna take a lot. It's a lot," said Days.

Fortunately, no one was inside the home at the time the fire broke out, but some of their beloved pets were.

"We lost we lost three, three cats, three cats, um, and the other cats, they're on their way to the vet right now," said Days.

Their next-door neighbor, Dylan, called 911 once he spotted the flames.

"I saw a bunch of black smoke coming out that window right there because my window is right next to it so yeah, I even felt the heat from it and everything, so I packed up and I was ready to leave my room pretty much," said Dylan.

Days says he believes the fire started from the kitchen, and only the front end of the home is damaged, but he does not understand how the fire could have started.

"There's nobody home cooking anything. And we don't make things in the morning when we go to work. So if nothing was there and nothing was on and it started in the kitchen," said Days.

Fire crews say the fire was contained within 25 minutes, and responded within 6 minutes from the first 911 call.

"I wouldn't say total loss, but definitely it's uninhabitable right now," said Phil Rossi with Holister Fire.

"We have to find the place that's still central for him to drive as far as he does, and I'm going to Morgan Hill. Those things also need to be taken into consideration. But “as far permanent place to stay right now, we don't even know yet," said Days.

Family members are speaking with the American Red Cross about next steps.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.
