End of Week Warm Up
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) – Temperatures increase on Thursday—by a few degrees on the coast and 5-10ºF inland, then soar higher on Friday! Currently, a cut off area of low pressure sits to our south, but a building ridge will surge northeast toward us into Friday. It will be at its strongest Friday with a dome of heat over much of California. Inland areas are likely to see high temperatures 15-20ºF above normal and may approach records. Light onshore flow will keep the coast comfortable, but highs will also be warm for this time of year.

…for the near coastal waters from Point Pinos to Point Piedras Blancas in effect extended until 3AM Friday.
Northwest winds 20 to 30 kt with gusts up to 40 kt expected.
*Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.
Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for hazardous conditions.
Thursday: A few lingering coastal clouds and slightly warmer. Expect coastal highs in the low 60s to upper 70s—warmest on the north side of the bay—and mid-70s to low 90s inland. Gusty northwesterly onshore winds for the coast and up the valleys.
Overnight: Low clouds thicken becoming partly cloudy to mostly cloudy near the coast, partly cloudy to mostly clear inland. Few areas of patchy fog possible. Lows mild in the upper 40s to low 50s. Light winds.
Friday: Temperatures soar on Friday as a hot ridge takes over. Expect inland highs to be 15-20ºF above normal. Records for the day are already pretty high, so we may not break any, but it will still be hot. At the coast, weak onshore flow will keep the beaches somewhat cool, but temperatures will rise quickly as you move away from the coast or up in elevation. Expect coastal highs in the upper 60s to mid-80s—warmest around Santa Cruz—and inland highs in the upper 80s to around 103ºF. Lighter winds, but occasionally windy up valleys late in the day.
***HEAT ADVISORY***
…for interior areas of Monterey County, all of San Benito County, Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Santa Clara Valley and Diablo Range in Santa Clara County in effect from 11AM Friday until 8PM Friday.
*Temperatures in the mid 90s to 105 degrees.
*This level of heat affects most individuals sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Impacts possible in some health systems and in heat-sensitive industries.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, and avoid prolonged periods in the sun. In addition, be sure to check up on relatives and neighbors.
Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Saturday: Decreasing morning, low clouds becoming mostly sunny. Temperatures will begin to cool on Saturday, but it will still be a warm day inland. Near seasonable along the coast. Coastal highs in the 60s and 70s. Inland 80s to 100°F. Calm winds, breezy at times.
Extended: We’ll cool further as we head into early next week as a deep trough digs down the coast. We’re watching for a slight chance of rain too, maybe around Tuesday. Winds will pick back up again as well.

The outlook from the Climate Prediction Center for June 5th – 11th calls for the likelihood of ABOVE normal temperatures and BELOW normal precipitation.

- ENSO Forecast: Neutral conditions persist through summer & possibly into next winter.
-Area drought status: Abnormally dry for portions of southern San Benito and southeastern Monterey Counties. Drought-free for the remainder of the KION coverage area.
