CHP: Person killed in officer-involved shooting after crash in Monterey County

COUNTY OF MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The CHP said it is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead Saturday evening.

The agency said units were dispatched to a reported crash on northbound Highway 101 at Ralph Lane around 6:55 p.m. Upon arrival, a CHP officer began assessing the scene when he encountered a person involved in the crash, according to the CHP.

The CHP said for reasons still under investigation, an officer-involved shooting occurred and that person was struck. Lifesaving measure were taken, according to the CHP, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP added that the CHP officer was not injured during the shooting.

The CHP said the incident remains under investigation, which is now being lead by the Monterey County District Attorney's Office in accordance with established protocols.

KION reached out to the CHP and the DA's office for more information, including whether the person killed was armed and if the officer was in any danger, how many shots were fired and whether the officer has been placed on administrative leave; we are waiting on a response.
