County of Monterey: All evacuation orders and warnings lifted as firefighters make progress on Piney Fire

CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The County of Monterey announced all evacuation orders and warnings are being lifted around the Piney Fire.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office says evacuations were initially in place along parts of Carmel Valley Road and all of Martin Road due to the Piney Fire.

As of Wednesday evening, Cal Fire says the fire has grown to 221 acres and 30% containment.

Residents concerned about Piney Fire burning on property

"I just hope everybody is safe because right now we don't know if our neighbors are safe. We don't know if their animals are safe," said Jennifer Okamoto, a property owner in the Carmel Valley Area.

The Sheriff's Office says evacuations are being conducted on the 38000 block of Carmel Valley Road and all of Martin Road.

Okamoto says she's worried about her family's home.

"It's just it's a childhood home. It's a family home. So it's the last piece I have of my family," said Okamoto.

Roughly 10 to 12 structures are in the immediate area of the fire according to Cal Fire.

The county currently has some evacuations listed as a warning but the sheriff's office says their deputies are actively evacuating the areas.

Cal Fire says they will continue to remain on scene throughout the night.

"We've got very large air tankers or our vlats assigned to the incident. And what they're able to do is deliver retardant and a much longer line than we can with our normal initial attack tankers. Having those assets come in and help us try to get out ahead of this fire is huge," says Josh Silvera, Battalion Chief for Cal Fire.

A temporary evacuation point is being set up at the Carmel Valley Library at 65 West Carmel Valley Road.

The county says the library will close at 8 p.m. and reopen at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The county also reported no residents impacted by the fire visited the temporary evacuation point today.

Smoke could be seen from the Country Club Heights 1 (Carmel) camera and the Pinyon Peak camera.

According to Cal Fire, the fire is wind and terrain-driven at this time and there are some structures near the fire.

This fire is burning close to where the River Fire burned in 2020.
