Two men killed in Seaside crash identified

SEASIDE, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A 19-year-old man from Watsonville and a homeless man are dead after a crash that happened near Sherwin-Williams store in Seaside Sunday night, shocking the people who live in the area.

"It's obviously terrible, it's a shame that both of them lost their lives," said Ryan Eller, who lives in Seaside.

The Monterey County Coroners office identified the driver killed as Leon Torres and the homeless person as 40-year-old Daniel Andrew Carrico-Lynn. Seaside police said the driver struck the island at Del Monte and Fremont Boulevard before overturning his vehicle.

Seaside investigators said this could have been prevented.

"With safe driving and no drinking and driving and slower speed," said Patrol Sergeant Eddie Enriquez with the Seaside Police Department.

Seaside police said three other people were in the car with Torres. Police said they were told by the passengers they were all drinking at the beach before the crash and authorities said they're still looking into if the passengers will face charges.

"It does not appear that way, but the investigation is ongoing. There's other areas that need to be looked into," said Enriquez.

Seaside Police said two men were killed in a Seaside DUI crash late Sunday night, including a homeless pedestrian.

According to police, a vehicle traveling 100 miles per hour on Del Monte Blvd drove onto the island at Del Monte and Fremont, striking a pedestrian who was on the island.

The driver was ejected from the car after it continued onto Fremont and crashed through a raised partition for the left turn lane onto Fremont and overturned.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office identified the driver as 19-year-old Leon Torres of Watsonville. The transient killed was identified as 40-year-old Daniel Andrew Carrico-Lynn of Monterey County.

Police said the vehicle had multiple occupants from Watsonville, all who were under the influence of alcohol.

Investigators also said the driver had a suspended license and was on DUI probation.
