Biden declares disaster declaration for County of Monterey and Santa Cruz County from February storms

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION-TV)- The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services announced on Sunday that President Biden granted a disaster declaration for California which included the County of Monterey and Santa Cruz County.

Governor Gavin Newsom requested the disaster deceleration on March 21. The declaration supports recovery and funding efforts from storms that took place in February.

The counties that will be receiving aid include Butte, Glenn, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Sutter and Ventura Counties.

Newsom said that the storms in February costed the state and the Federal Management Agency nearly $88 million.

FEMA estimated the damage in Monterey County was worth $3,547,000. Newsom said most of the damage was due to downed trees and power lines which caused road closures.

FEMA also estimated the damage in Santa Cruz County was worth $1,383,436. Officials said that was due multiple roads experiencing slip-outs in the Santa Cruz mountains. The estimate also included the damage to the Santa Cruz Wharf.

Four of the pillars were damaged to high tide and heavy surf. The Dolphin Restaurant was also damaged and has yet to open.
