Cabrillo College receives grant worth $633,334 to address basic needs for students, improve graduation and transfer numbers

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Cabrillo College is receiving a grant lasting three years worth $633,334 to address basic needs for students.

Cabrillo staff said the grant will also help improve graduation and transfer outcomes at the community college.

The grant is expected to provide a boost to Cabrillo's Nourishment and Essentials Supports Team (NEST) program by developing a navigation system for students to find food, housing, transport and technology and connect them with health and wellness services.

Cabrillo College President and Superintendent Dr. Matthew Wetstein expressed gratitude for the grant. "

“Cabrillo students are experiencing the most extreme levels of housing and food insecurity due to a severe shortage of affordable housing and the extremely high cost of living in Santa Cruz County.”

The grant will also enable another activity, allowing Cabrillo staff to partner with the Second Harvest Food Bank and Salud Para La Gente to refer students to stable and sustainable food and healthcare resources.
