Lockdown lifted at Laurel Wood Elementary after police received reports of suspicious person

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Worried parents were able to let out a sigh of relief after Salinas Police searched the Laurel Wood Elementary campus for a suspicious individual but found nothing.

Police initially received reports of that suspicious person just after 8 a.m. and that the individual may have a weapon.

According to police, the report was that the individual was walking along the park nearby.

Because of how close that park is to Laurel Wood Elementary, a lockdown was initiated with around 13 officers responding to the scene.

Police used a drone for an aerial search of the campus and neighboring streets, plus officers walked the campus and surrounding areas to find any sign of the individual that was reported.

According to police they weren't able to find anything, leading to the safe reopening of the school

The district says additional counseling will be available to students and they want to reassure everyone the campus is safe for return.
