A witness and friends rescue man at Marina State Beach
MARINA, Calif. (KION)
A man was rescued from the water at Marina State Beach by a group of citizens and officers Wednesday night and is now in the hospital.
His current condition has not been released.
The call came in at around 5:30 p.m.
A witness tells KION that she swam into the water to help rescue the man, but was struggling to get through the apparent riptide. The Good Samaritan was washed back towards shore, but was eventually able to get her hands on him. Multiple people, including the man's friends and officers with the Marina Police Department, aided in the attempt and helped get the victim to shore, according to multiple witnesses and Marina PD.
A Marina police officer performed CPR until medics arrived. CPR continued as emergency personnel and California State Parks showed up at the beach, and the victim was transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
"The individuals that were with him responded with great integrity and valor and [we] are really happy our officers were able to get there in short order," said California State Parks, Monterey District Superintendent, Brent Marshall.
Marshall says there was no lifeguard at that beach at the time, unlike over the Memorial Day Weekend when they had extra officers to watch the surf and large crowds. Marshall cites staffing and budgetary concerns.
"Unfortunately on a Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. that beach was not guarded. Although we have a few lifeguards in service in the district, they were not in that area and they responded as quickly as they could," Marshall said.
Marshall adds there were no similar incidents over Memorial Day Weekend.
This is a developing story. It has been updated to reflect additional information from witnesses and law enforcement.
